Noise Can Help You Sleep

Getting a good, uninterrupted night’s sleep is key to proper dreaming and promotes good physical and mental health. White Noise Generators

The term white noise is intended to be similar to white light.  Since white light contains all light frequencies in equal proportions; white noise is intended to be similar in that it contains all sound frequencies. Usually this is accomplished by generating random frequencies in equal proportions per octave this is done either by using a computer, special electronics, or a dedicated sound synthesizer. Since every increasing octave is double the size of the previous, this effectively increases the high frequency content.

Pink Noise Generators

The term pink noise is basically White noise, but with the amplitude decreasing with increasing frequency at a constant rate of 3db per octave. Simply put, the lower frequencies are emphasized as a result.  You will find that they sound similar; but most can notice that the Pink Noise has an emphasized low end.

One major advantage of Pink noise over White noise is the added low frequency emphasis.  This makes it less like static/rain and more like a distant ocean roar.  This emphasized low frequency can be a benefit if you are dealing with low frequency noises.  If you live in a neighborhood and have to deal with car sub woofers or industrial noises in your, this additional low end emphasis can provide additional masking power.

Since noise generators can mask unpleasant background noises, and can sound like a pleasant rain fall; some people find it useful to help fall asleep, nap, or relax. They are also frequently use by tinnitus sufferers since the white noise tends to mask the ringing sound of tinnitus in the ears. Tinnitus, or ringing in the ears, is a very irritating condition frequently without known cause or treatment, and is also a symptom of Mnires disease, a disorder of the inner ear that causes vertigo, and white noise provides a contrast between the ringing and an absence of any noise that reduces the apparent level of sound.
