Water Dreams




Seeing water in your dream, symbolizes your unconscious and your emotional state of mind. Water frequently shows up in our dreams and can have many different meanings depending on its form, clarity, etc. Water is the living essence of the psyche and the flow of life energy.  It is symbolic of spirituality, knowledge, healing and refreshment. Water also symbolizes emotions, intuition, and that which is ‘below the surface’ the unconscious mind.

No matter what form the water in your dream takes, have a good look at its clarity for more insight into it symbolism. Seeing calm, clear water in your dream signifies that you are in tune with your spirituality. It denotes serenity, peace of mind, and rejuvenation. Whereas seeing muddy or dirty water in your dream indicates that you are wallowing in your negative emotions. You may need to devote some time to clarify your mind and find internal peace. Alternatively, it suggests that your thinking/judgment is unclear and clouded. If you are immersed in muddy water, then it indicates that you are in over your head in a situation and are overwhelmed by your emotions. Stagnant, algae filled water might indicate feelings of being stuck in some area of your life.

Seeing boiling water suggests that you are expressing some emotional chaos. It might also mean that feelings from your unconscious are evolving and ready to be acknowledged. You might need to let off some steam.

To hear running water in your dream means meditation, reflection and pondering of your thoughts and emotions.

To dream that you are walking on water, suggests that you have supreme and ultimate control over your emotions. Alternately it might suggest that you need to “stay on top” of your emotions and not let them get out of hand.

Dreams of the ocean can have numerous diverse meanings. Oceans are places of limitlessness, when standing on seashores, the ocean appears to stretch into infinity. Oceans are deep and can symbolize deep emotions.

Ocean tides are affected by the moon a symbol of intuition and the unconscious and dreams of oceans are often symbolic of the same. The seashore is a meeting place a place where sea touches the sand.  Therefore the ocean can be a kind of metaphor for the conscious and unconscious mind coming together.

The action of the sea can provide more information about our dreams. Turbulent seas might indicate emotional upset or deep and painful stirrings in the unconscious. Calm, rhythmic seas may be symbols of a relaxed state of being, that of being in touch with your intuition, or of being in one with the Universe.

Seeing clear, calm waves in your dream signify renewal, a peaceful state of mind and tranquil emotions. It might also be an indication an important decision to be made. If you are riding a wave, then it symbolizes that you are trying to get a handle on your emotions.

To hear waves crashing in your dream symbolizes tenderness and relaxation. It also brings about feelings of sensuality and sexuality.

To dream that you are caught in a tidal wave symbolizes the strength of your emotions, perhaps accompanied by tears that you may be holding back in your waking life.

In waking life tsunamis take place when an earthquake or some other violent action takes place beneath the ocean floor causing the sea rise up which in turn creates a gigantic wave that can cause enormous damage when it hit land. In our dream life, a tsunami might symbolize the same feeling the feeling of being overwhelmed by a enormous, powerful force that is beyond your control. Dreaming of a tsunami can be an indication that you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed or emotional upheaval.

Rivers can be symbolic of a journey; this journey can be physical, emotional, or spiritual. Rivers usually flow into much bigger bodies of water which can point to a transition of some sort. Look closely at the river. Is it moving fast? Are you caught in the river? If so, how are you feeling? Water moving rapidly may indicate rapid changes a feeling of being overwhelmed or anxious could indicate feelings that the changes are happening too fast. It may also indicate a feeling of being out of control. If, however, you are calm it can signify that you are comfortable with the changes going on around you.

Seeing a waterfall in your dream is symbolic of letting go.  You are releasing all those pent up emotions and negative feelings. Alternately the dream may also represent your goals and desires. In particular, if the waterfall is clear, then it represents rebirth or renewal.

To dream that you are at the bottom of the waterfall, suggests that you are feeling emotionally overwhelmed. You are experiencing difficulties in coping with your feelings.

Storms may indicate turbulent emotions or the destruction of the old situations, relationships, etc. Most people interpret this as being negative. However, sometimes the only way to free ourselves from a bad situation is to completely rid ourselves of the old, a cleansing of that which no longer serves us well. Stormy dreams though usually do mean that the transition will feel difficult. Just like a storms it will pass! 

To dream that you are drowning, indicates that you are feeling overwhelmed by emotions or you have repressed issues that are coming back to haunt you. If you drown to death, then is refers to an emotional rebirth.  If you survive the drowning, then a waking relationship or situation will ultimately survive the turmoil.

To see someone drowning in your dream, suggests that you are becoming too deeply involved in something that is beyond your control. Alternatively, it represents a sense of loss in your own identity. You are unable to distinguish who you are.

To dream that you rescue someone from drowning indicates that you have successfully recognized certain emotions and characteristics that are symbolized by the drowning victim.  

Water dreams are exceptional signposts of what’s going on with us emotionally and spiritually. Use them to help you continue in your growing emotionally and spiritually.

    I dreamt I fell from a plane into a clear ocean, but sunk to the bottom and couldn’t swim up. I panicked at first but then was slowly able to breath, and all I could see around me was blue water and white sand. What does that mean?
